Grass, wholecrop, legume and maize; clearly not all forages are the same. This is why the Advance range of inoculants from Micron Bio-Systems are crop-specific.
Good silaging practices and preparation are of course key, ensuring the silage is harvested at the right time, with attention and care taken throughout the process from beginning to end, to reap rewards in the milk tank. Getting this right, however, is often a challenge! There are many things out of your control, not least the vagaries of the weather. Here we think about what you can control, to help you get you more out of what you grow, by using crop-specific silage inoculants.
Grass, wholecrop, legume and maize; clearly not all forages are the same. This is why the Advance range of inoculants from Micron Bio-Systems are crop-specific.
We can all see clearly the physical difference in leaf structure and density from forage to forage. At Micron, we know that some fibres take more effort to release the energy within them than others. Our scientifically selected enzymes unlock the energy from the plant fibres and significantly increase the digestibility of treated forages for the cow.
By using Advance, a forage-specific, enzyme-based inoculant you will release more energy and protein for milk production, reduce nutrient losses during fermentation and improve your silages digestibility compared to untreated silage or by just using a simple inoculant. This extra energy is then partitioned towards milk production thereby reducing the reliance on purchased feeds.
Return on investment?
To achieve an extra litre of milk from purchased feed (£290/tonne) will cost you 12p/ additional litre of milk. Improving your milk from forage using Advance Silage Inoculant (£1.15/treated tonne) will cost you 3p/ additional litre of milk based on a DMI of 13kgs forage. This is based on more energy and protein being made available. These extra nutrients will be fibre based and therefore rumen friendly. Since the digestive tract represents a huge proportion of the cows’ immune system, having a healthy rumen is essential to promote herd health.
Advance silage inoculants have been consistently proven to increase energy and protein availability, reduce DM loss during fermentation, increase DMI and stop secondary spoilage both at the clamp face and within the TMR.
